Aged care and restrictive practices: Responsibilities and minimising use (2 of 2)

CPD hours:
2

Restrictive practices have traditionally been used in aged care to manage behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (Commission) is committed to minimising risks to recipients of aged care (Care Recipients) and ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect.

The use of restrictive practices in Care Recipients must always be a last resort, in the least restrictive form possible, and for the shortest time.

Building on the information covered in the previous module (Aged care and restrictive practices: Definitions, principles and ethics), this module focuses on responsibilities in relation to the use of restrictive practices, behaviour support plans, and concludes with a discussion of alternative strategies to consider in managing behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.

We recommend that prior to undertaking this module, participants complete part 1 of this series: Aged care and restrictive practices: Definitions, principles and ethics.

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Understand the rules for the use of restrictive practices in residential aged care.
  • Understand the additional responsibilities when using restrictive practices, including in emergencies.
  • Discuss the development and application of behaviour support plans in accordance with the Quality of Care Principles.
  • Understand the Aged Care Quality Standards in relation to the use of restrictive practices.
  • Understand how to minimise the use of restrictive practices, and how to consider alternatives for addressing behaviours of concern.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • This is learning objective 1.
  • This is learning objective 2.
  • This is learning objective 3.
  • This is learning objective 4.
  • This is learning objective 5.
  • This is learning objective 6.
