Foot and nail care: Nursing care and interventions

CPD hours:
2

Good foot health has a positive effect on general health and wellbeing and is essential for mobility, comfort, and activities of daily living.

Benefits include:

  • Reduced pain
  • Increased physical activity
  • Increased social contact and self-esteem
  • Reduced risk of falls

Although the complex structure of the feet puts them at risk of a range of problems, foot health can be maintained with proper foot care.

This module covers basic foot care.

This is the routine nursing care of normal skin and nails of the feet that people would usually perform for themselves.

It does not include specialized foot care for clients with high-risk feet due to conditions such as diabetes or vascular disease.

Foot care is part of individual’s daily hygiene requirements, and essential for maintaining healthy, functioning feet.

When people are no longer able to do it themselves, foot care becomes an important aspect of a nurse’s or carer’s role.

This module will be of interest to anyone providing care to older people.

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Recognise three common foot problems.
  • List the equipment needed to provide basic foot care.
  • Demonstrate how to clip a client’s nails.
  • Discuss when a client should be referred for specialist foot care.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • This is learning objective 1.
  • This is learning objective 2.
  • This is learning objective 3.
  • This is learning objective 4.
  • This is learning objective 5.
  • This is learning objective 6.
